Iaido (The Way of Sword Drawing and Harmony)
Shoryuin Muso Chishin Ryu Heiho Iaido and Ittoh Ryu Iaijutsu course is designed to introduce the fundamentals and advance skills of Iaido dynamics of Japanese classical martial discipline. Curricular objective contains proper handling of a sword, basic body movements, application of basic Iaido drills, drawing, cutting, parrying, returning techniques and overall understanding of philosophy and ceremonial aesthetics of Iaido.

The way of the sword and the importance of the sword in Japanese culture is legendary. Classical Iaido and Iaijutsu trace their roots back many centuries in Japanese history, back to the time when swords and highly sharpened and polished bladed weapons began to replace longer, more unwieldy weapons on the battlefield. Japan remained in a state of constant internal warring and civil war between the various clans and landed nobility for thousands of years. Throughout this time period, the sword continued to grow in importance and tradition, culminating with the reign of the Samurai. Many schools of fencing emerged during this time and use of the sword became a highly refined art, acquiring a large number of skills, techniques, tradition, and ceremony.

At Bushin Kan Dojo of Williamsburg we give instruction in all aspects of this classical art form. You will gain the knowledge of all physical, spiritual, mental, and ceremonial keys to this ancient form of warfare, and students will progress toward the heightened state of “Warriors Mind.”
